Ahmadinejad: Sanctions will not harm Iran
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the IAEA report on Tehran's nuclear program marks a 'historic victory' for the country.
Ahmadinejad congratulated the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, as well as the Iranian nation for what he called the country's biggest 'historic victory' against 'oppressive powers' since the revolution of 1979. He made the remarks during the course of an interview with IRIB state television on Saturday.
Reiterating Tehran's stance on the nuclear issue, Ahmadinejad affirmed that the Islamic Republic would not retreat one iota from the 'peaceful objectives' it seeks with its nuclear program as the nation supports it with their strong will.
Suggesting that all United Nations Security Council sanctions have proven to be ineffective so far, he said the imposition of further punitive measures will yield nothing but the same result.
"They could spend 100 years passing resolutions but it wouldn't change anything," said the Iranian president.
Ahmadinejad criticized the 'domineering powers' in the world, claiming they have used the nuclear issue as an excuse to interfere in Iran's internal affairs.
The latest International Atomic Energy Agency report declared that the major issues pertaining to Iran's nuclear program have either been 'fully' resolved or are 'no longer outstanding at this stage'.
Washington and its allies had used 'ambiguities' about Iran's past nuclear activities to impose two Security Council sanctions against the country under the pretext that Tehran was pursuing nuclear weaponry.
In its Friday report, however, the UN nuclear watchdog said it made 'quite good progress' in examining Iran's nuclear facilities because of the extensive cooperation of Iranian officials.
