Iraq's Talabani greets Ahmadinejad

Iranian president has been officially greeted by his Iraqi counterpart in a visit aimed to improve security in the war-stricken state.

The Iranian head of state Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived Sunday in Baghdad for the first-ever trip by an Iranian president to Iraq, walking a red carpet past Iraqi troops in dress uniform to meet the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

He was greeted by Talabani. A military honor guard saluted the two and a band played both national anthems as they walked slowly down the red carpet at Talabani's residency.

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told The Associated Press that Ahmadinejad plans to leave early Monday.

Ahmadinejad is scheduled to hold meetings with Talabani and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, both of whom have made official visits to Iran since taking office.

The US has said it will neither be involved nor provide security to Ahmadinejad visit.
